In 1999 November, Gradinarsky et al. installed a geodetic GPS receiver (Turbo Rogue 8000) on a monument about 50 m east of the ESO container (which is about 15 m north of the NRAO container). Based on 38 days of observation between 1999 November and 2000 May, they determined the position of their monument with an uncertainty of less than 10 mm. (Gradinarsky, L. P., Johansson, J. At the location of the NRAO container, there is about a 411 m offset between the WGS84 and SAm56 datums. For UTM Zone 19 coordinates,
Easting WGS84 = SAm56 - 189 m, and Northing WGS84 = SAm56 - 365 m.Within the boundaries of the science preserve, the variation in this coordinate translation is 1 m or less in either coordinate. This coordinate translation was determined by the MADTRAN program (v. 4.2), which states a global uncertainty of ± 25 m. [MADTRAN was (formerly?) available from the U. S. National Imagery and Mapping Agency].
